Dog Spay & Neuter
One unspayed female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in 6 years. Only one in ten dogs born in the U.S. will find a good home. Millions of healthy adoptable dogs are euthanized each year nationwide.
Spaying and neutering prevents the death of thousands of dogs. Spay/neuter helps reduce our dog overpopulation, which places an enormous financial burden on our tax payers and local shelters.
Spaying (procedure for females) can be done at the age of 5-6 months. There are added health benefits if the procedure is performed before the dog’s first heat , which generally occurs at six months.
Spay Benefits
• Reduces the number of unwanted puppies/dogs
• Eliminates the nuisance of twice a year heat cycles
• Eliminates risk of ovarian and uterine cancer; decreases risk of mammary gland tumors
• Eliminates risk of pyometra (uterine infection) which can be fatal; recommended treatment is spaying
• Helps dogs live longer, healthier lives
Neutering (procedure for males) can be done at the age of 6 months or older, depending on breed. It is best if a dog is neutered before he displays any negative male behavior.

• Reduces the number of unwanted puppies/dogs
• Reduces aggressive behavior towards people and other dogs
• Eliminates testicular cancer; decreases chance of prostate disease
• Less desire to roam, therefore lowering the risk of being hit by a car
• Helps dogs live longer, healthier lives
Paws of Chico Spay & Neuter Program helps pet owners who live in Chico. You must have a Chico address. Due to a grant for dogs 40lbs or greater, we are able to help the surrounding communities with large dogs. If you need financial assistance, you can download an application. You may also call 895-2109 to request one. Applications can be picked up at the Butte Humane Society located at 2579 Fair Street.
A Paws volunteer will call you to review your application and determine how much you can contribute towards the spay or neuter procedure. A voucher will be sent to you providing all information needed to make your appointment with one of our participating veterinarians.
